Canon Marketing Japan Invests in Wayfarer, a Hotel Operator and Developer of a Next-Generation Hotel AI-powered Platform

29 September 2026

Canon Marketing Japan Inc. (President & Representative Director: Masachika Adachi, “Canon MJ”) has invested, through its corporate venture capital (CVC) fund Canon Marketing Japan MIRAI Fund, in WAYFARER K.K. (Representative: Winston Chu, Lans Koide, “Wayfarer”), a hotel operator that also develops and provides an AI-powered hotel operations platform. Wayfarer operates hotels under its own brand, primarily in urban areas, and develops and provides “Materia Connect,” a hotel management AI platform that leverages data and insights gathered from on-site operations. Through this investment, Canon MJ aims to advance the use of technology to enhance hotel operations and drive initiatives to create new customer experiences.

The number of international visitors to Japan reached a record high in 2025*, and demand for accommodations remains strong, particularly in urban areas. At the same time, chronic labor shortages remain a challenge for the lodging industry. Expectations are rising for “Hotel DX”—the digital transformation of hotel operations—as a means to enhance profitability with limited staff while providing high-quality lodging experiences to a diverse range of travelers.

Wayfarer is a startup that has been operating urban hotels primarily in Kyoto and Osaka since its founding in 2019. Currently, the company operates 13 properties under three brands—“Wayfarer,” “Kabin,” and “ORI”—tailored to different travel styles and is expanding into markets such as Tokyo and Fukuoka.

What sets the company apart is that it is not only a hotel operator but also a technology company that has developed “Materia Connect,” an AI-powered hotel operations platform designed to support hotel operations and travelers’ stays—covering everything from pricing and reservations to check-in. By integrating hotel operations with software development, the company leverages data and insights gathered from its own hotels to rapidly test and improve features. Going forward, the company will begin offering “Materia Connect”—equipped with these features—to other lodging operators on a full-scale basis, supporting them in improving profitability, streamlining operations, and enhancing convenience for travelers.

The Canon MJ Group is committed to creating new value by exploring cutting-edge technologies and business ideas and promoting open innovation to solve social issues with a forward-looking perspective. Canon Marketing Japan MIRAI Fund has identified “Life Purpose” and “Business Revitalization” as key investment areas.

As one of its concrete initiatives toward creating this new value, the Canon MJ Group is working to foster innovation focused on further improving productivity in hotel operations through technology and delivering personalized customer experiences tailored to each traveler. Canon MJ highly values Wayfarer’s integrated approach to hotel operations and technology development. By continuously testing and improving its technologies in real-world hotel environments, Wayfarer is helping drive digital transformation in the hospitality industry while delivering enhanced lodging experiences to guests. These strengths were key factors in Canon MJ’s decision to invest in the company.

Through this investment, Canon MJ aims to support the advancement of technology-driven hotel operations while contributing to the sustainable growth of the hospitality industry and the creation of more enriching travel experiences.
